The Canadian University Music Society (MusCan) and the Acadia University School of Music present "Songs of Hope" - a gala concert being held as part of the annual MusCan Conference, hosted this year at Acadia. This concert features the Stadacona Band of the Royal Canadian Navy with narrator Shawnee Paul performing John Estacio's epic work, "I Lost My Talk," constructed around the poem by Eskasoni poet Rita Joe.
The program will also include new works by Greg Steinke and Dorothy Chang, performed by duo Tristan De Borba (saxophone) and Nicholas D'Amato (bass) and saxophonist Nicole Strum.
Admission is by freewill donation at the door.
Mask and distance protocols will be in place.
Audience members may also be interested in attending the Conference Keynote Address, which will be given by Dr. Gordon E. Smith of Queens University. Titled "Songs of Hope from a Mi'kmaw Community," Smith will trace the impact of the poem - and that of Rita Joe - and its genesis as a multi-media composition commissioned by the National Arts Centre Orchestra.
