Dr. Gordon E. Smith of Queens University will offer the Conference Keynote Address for the annual Conference of the Canadian University Music Society (MusCan), hosted this year at the Acadia University School of Music.
Titled "Songs of Hope from a Mi'kmaw Community," this lecture will address the story of "I Lost My Talk," a poem by the Mi'kmaw poet Rita Joe of Eskasoni. Published in 1987, "I Lost My Talk" is a powerful narration of institutional suffering in the residential school system. Smith will trace the impact of the poem - and that of Rita Joe - and its genesis as a multi-media composition commissioned by the National Arts Centre Orchestra.
The keynote address is sponsored by Acadia's Division of Research & Graduate Studies.
Members of the public are welcome to attend.
Mask and distance protocols will be in effect.
