This week we will celebrate Ukrainian culture as we cook borshch, zhytniy khlib, and more with our Ukrainian neighbours.
Borshch is a traditional root vegetable and beef soup that is enjoyed by several countries, including Ukraine. It is filled with beef, dill, beetroot, potatoes, carrots, tomato, onion, bell pepper, and cabbage. The flavours are so rich, and so are those of zhytniy khlib, a traditional rye bread, often topped with salo (a lard-like fat) and a slice of garlic. Some advise not kissing others after eating!
We will bring the base borshch ingredients, zhytniy khlib dough, garlic, and salo.
We invite you to bring: Additional root vegetables for the borshch, meats, salads, breads, spreads, and any other side you enjoy with soup. Appetizers, snacks, desserts, and drinks are appreciated too!
We will make a smaller batch of borshch without meat for those who are vegetarian.
Don't forget to bring something to drink and your plates and cutlery!
Please register so we know how much vegetables and meat to buy and bread dough to make.
