Songwriter Caleb Miles joins host Zakary Miller for an intimate evening of songs and conversation, all recorded live for The Friendly Heckler Podcast.
It is difficult to categorize Caleb Miles. Just when you’re convinced he’s a “blues guy” after seeing him play a solo set on a resonator guitar, you turn around and he’s playing drums for Valley indie-rockers Dayliner. Then he’s proving himself a spontaneously versatile lead guitarist with The Hupman Brothers Band. Then you listen to his cds, with distinctive original songs that range all over the genre map. Caleb is hard to pin down, and he’s aiming to keep it that way.
Caleb Miles wears many musical hats, and he’s one of those rare musicians that can deliver comfortably in almost any performance situation. First and foremost a guitarist, Caleb has been playing lead guitar in original rock’n’roll bands since he first joined The Illegal Aliens in Albuquerque at the age of 15. His musical travels led him to Detroit, Michigan; Athens, Georgia; Lexington, Kentucky; and Portland, Oregon, before ultimately moving to Nova Scotia in 2005. Along the way he developed his songwriting and recording skills, as well as learning to play drums, keyboards, mandolin, bass, and pedal-steel.
Caleb’s solo performances showcase his original songs as well as his eclectic tastes in the roots of rock’n’roll. Delta blues and jug-band tunes mix with Hank Williams and Buddy Holly, Grateful Dead with Motown and Chuck Berry. Beatles songs are given stylistic overhauls, becoming jump-blues or country classics. Caleb’s impressive abilities on the guitar, whether acoustic, electric, or resonator, shine throughout.
Caleb has opened for Harry Manx, Ron Hynes, Thom Swift, Corb Lund, Stephen Fearing and Erin Costelo, and with The Hupman Brothers Band won the 2010 ECMA for Best Blues Recording and 2011 Music Nova Scotia Best Blues Album, as well as twice playing the Dutch Mason Blues Fest (opening for Robert Cray and The Sheepdogs) and sharing stages with Charles Bradley, Garrett Mason, and Matt Andersen.
Caleb is an Aries, enjoys winter more than summer, and writes most of his songs while mowing the lawn or stacking firewood. He loves coffee, beer, and Mexican food, as well as discovering obscure and commercially overlooked musical artists from the 50s, 60s, and 70s. He hates mosquitos, humidity, and writing bios.
