"Weighing Options: Tidal Power or Offshore Wind for Nova Scotia?" a presentation by Graham Daborn
Nova Scotia, which has been struggling to move away from a coal-based electrical system, lies between two major marine renewable energy sources: tidal power in the Bay of Fundy, and offshore wind on the Scotian Shelf. We have been 'investigating' the tidal power option for more than 100 years, and the recent withdrawal of support has once again raised the issue of whether tidal power has a future here. Offshore wind would be a new venture for the Province, following extensive developments elsewhere in the world. Will this venture be any more successful than those of the past (e.g. tidal power, offshore oil and gas, etc.)? This talk will briefly compare the technical, environmental, management and political issues that have plagued previous initiatives into marine renewable energy in the Province, and consider whether the latest political hyperbole is just, in Yogi Berra's phrase: "déjà vu all over again".
