Dr. Cindy Aalders from Regent College will speak on “Becoming a Baptist Woman: The Social, Intellectual, and Religious Worlds of Mary Steele Tomkins (1793-1861).” Mary Steele Tomkins was the great-niece of the hymnwriter Anne Steele. In her lecture, Dr. Aalders will examine her letters, diaries, and other sources to explore questions related to how she became a Baptist woman—adopting the faith for herself, rather than simply being born into it. She will use Tomkins’ story to ask, “How might a child take up faith as their own?” The lecture is sponsored by the Acadia Centre for Baptist and Anabaptist Studies.
