All That We Are / Roxane Fiore
ARTSPLACE Main Gallery, Nov 2-Dec 20
Opening: Saturday, Nov 2, 12-2 pm
Roxane Fiore is a visual artist from Montreal who draws, in chalk pastels, works that are inspired by her paper assemblages. She fabricates illusory spaces that move away from their original context, questioning the very ideas of reality and existence.
Artist Statement:
"I create paper assemblages by cutting and tearing images from magazines, books and newspapers I find and collect. Selected for their aesthetic value as well as their ambiguity, these familiar-looking image fragments are then juxtaposed and superimposed in a process guided in part by chance and happy accidents. The spontaneity and freedom of this working method give birth to more or less complex assemblages, which present a sublimated version of the world around us. The deconstruction/reconstruction dialectic inherent to my process allows me to play with paradoxes and, thus, navigate between logic and illogic, comfort and discomfort, natural and artificial, reality and fiction."
-----------
Roxane Fiore obtained her bachelor’s degree in Painting and Drawing from Concordia University in 2018, where she was awarded the Lise-Hélène Larin Drawing Scholarship. Her works have been exhibited in various group exhibitions, including at Z Art Space, Atelier-Galerie 2112 and during Artch (Emerging Contemporary Art Market). Her artworks are now part of multiple private collections across Canada.
Most recently, Roxane received a Research and Creation Grant from the Canada Council for the Arts, which she used in part to participate in two artist residencies, namely at the Fish Factory Creative Centre in Iceland, and at the Lademoen Kunstnerverksteder (LKV) in Norway.
