Jazz guitarist Sam Wilson brings her trio to celebrate her album Wintertides at the Annex.
Licensed show, under 19 are allowed, accompanied by an adult. Cash and card accepted for beer, wine, cider and non-alcoholic drinks.
Sam Wilson is an award-winning guitarist based on the east coast in Halifax/Kjipuktuk, Nova Scotia/Mi'kma'ki. Blending finger-style guitar with the far roving possibilities of jazz improvisation, her current artistic music is wild spaces and site specific responses evident by her latest release Wintertides. Developed in multiple residencies (Lena Residency and Ross Creek Centre for the Arts residency), the LP examines and contrasts the winter seasons of Canada’s east and west coastal climates. Blending elements of folk, contemporary chamber work and languid jazz, Wintertides offers an emotionally resonant follow-up to her award-winning recording Into A Heart Pt. II. It has been well received and reviewed by The Whole Note, Rhythm Changes, Jazzmania, CultureJazz, and Citizen Jazz among others. Since Wintertide’s release, it has been played regularly on national radio including CBC’s Saturday Night Jazz with Laila Biali. Sam successfully toured it across the east and west coast of Canada during the summer of 2024 with notable performances including the Halifax, Vancouver, Victoria and Calgary international jazz festivals. She is excited to bring the project to the Ross Creek Annex with Kyle Tully on bass and Caito Macdonal on drums.
“Sometimes on electric guitar, sometimes on acoustic guitar, Sam Wilson, throughout the record, demonstrates a very singular narrative expertise... certainly an original voice that we would like to hear on stage at home.” Yves Dorison (CultureJazz)
“The young east coast composer and virtuoso instrumentalist displays skill and mature judgement in the performance of her original works. She puts on an exquisite musical display on her fourth recording Wintertides, a homage to the landscapes of the two disparate coastlines of Canada.” - Raul da Gama (The Wholenote)
“Sam Wilson has been able to highlight the beauty of nature through the singularity of these ten compositions of intense fluidity.” - Mario Borroni (Citizen Jazz)
