Kate Beaton was born in Nova Scotia, took a history degree in New Brunswick, paid it off in Alberta, worked in a museum in British Columbia, then went to Ontario to draw pictures, followed by New York, Toronto, and back once again to rural Nova Scotia. She is best known for her comic strip Hark! A Vagrant, and her best-selling graphic memoir Ducks: Two Years in the Oil Sands which was a New York Times Notable book, one of Barack Obama’s favorite books, and Winner of Canada Reads 2023.
