This course is ideal for people who would like to learn the basics of orienteering. During the course of the day, you will begin to learn how to read maps using a Map Walk on Google image and a 1:10 000 scale map of area. Scale, distance, and features will all be discussed and you will learn to orient map to ground. In addition, participants will learn how to use a compass. Focus will be on parts, safety bearing, setting a bearing to an object, orient a map to compass, and set a bearing on a map. In the afternoon, everything learned will be put into practice. Jim Blanchard, the course leader, has been teaching orienteering and leading competitions for the Annapolis Valley Orienteering Club for a number of decades.

Meeting at Louis Millett Community Complex then we will be going to Lockhart and Ryan Memorial Park.

Bring a lunch, snacks, and plenty of fluids and wear clothes to fit the weather conditions of the day. Even if it is warm, long pants should be worn with a good pair of running shoes or light hiking boots. Participants may wish to carry a pencil and small notebook for notes.

Course fee is due by Sunday, May 4. Payments can be made by e-transfer ([email protected]) or by cheque (Blomidon Naturalists Society). Please reference 'Orienteering' in the subject line.
