Artist’s Statement:
This exhibition features work that talks about landscape with black ink, words, gestural mark making, and flowing colours. The lyrical imagery in Descriptions of Landscape wavers between the suggestion of a real place and the constant reminder of the painted surface. These are essentially quiet, yet graphic paintings, about this place where I now live.
Working at the intersection of materiality and memory, my paintings explore the notion of unpredictable edges, incorporating the immediacy of watercolour washes, hand-ground pigments, and dense black ink. I’m motivated by observation, visual responses, and by the simple act of walking along coastal landscapes.
I tend to work in series, mostly on paper and sometimes on wood panel. Gestural brushwork and water intermingle in my paintings, with written text woven in and around like ambulatory thoughts. My paintings present glimpses of topography that coalesce to depict the convergence of waves on rocks, of forests or marshes, then slip away with the instability of water.
