ABOUT THE ARTIST TALK:
To bring together the study and science of nature with artistic modes of sharing and expression. As a lifelong naturalist, Bev Wigney has been photographing, drawing, painting and writing about her observations of the natural world. In recent years, her study has incorporated the use of trail cameras to observe wildlife without interrupting their activities. Many secrets have been revealed, especially through the use of video recordings. Bev's gallery talk will be about her continuing efforts to rewild a small acreage, and of the ways in which her studies of flora and fauna have been recorded through various artistic means. Included in her talk will be an explanation of how trail cameras can be used for both nature study and artistic inspiration.

ARTIST STATEMENT:
"In 2010, I came to live on a 2-acre property alongside the Round Hill River. The decrepit house was surrounded by a dense jungle of non-native trees and plants typical of those introduced to this region by European settlers. In my first few months of getting to know the property, I was astounded and somewhat dismayed to discover the extent of this colonization -- not just of plants, but also non-native insects. This realization sparked the beginning of a multi-year project to gradually rewild the property with native trees and plants that would provide habitat for birds, mammals and insects.
During the fifteen years of this rewilding project, I have been documenting the progress through photography, drawing, painting and data collection. I have photographed and painted the birds that frequent the property and the moths that come to my moth lamps on summer nights. In 2024, I began using trail cameras to photograph wildlife. I soon discovered just how successful the rewilding had been as fox, bobcat, deer, bear, coyote, raccoons, skunks, flying squirrels, and many birds made appearances on a frequent basis.
Now it is time to share the natural history that is happening here -- through photographs, watercolour illustrations, and an edited video production. It is my hope that this exhibit might inspire others to consider rewilding the properties they steward, once they see what is possible."
ARTIST BIO:
Bev Wigney is a naturalist living alongside the Round Hill River near Annapolis Royal. She has been rewilding two acres of formerly overgrown, mostly invasive brush, into an increasingly rich habitat for wildlife. For the past two decades, she has been photographing nature with an emphasis on macrophotography of invertebrates. Her photos have been used in many field guides, books, magazines, and museum exhibits. In more recent years, nature journaling has become an integral part of recording and sharing what she observes. Bev is the founder and admin of the Annapolis Environment & Ecology group on Facebook.
