An exhibition of oil paintings by Virginia Bergmann of poetic, moody landscapes featuring the atmospheric effect on the landscape of low light times of day, dusk and dawn and in between.
ARTIST STATEMENT:
"A self-taught artist, born in Toronto but with deep roots in Nova Scotia, I've been inspired to paint by a deep appreciation for the peace and tranquility of the countryside. Memories of trips to the country as a young child, alone in the backseat gazing wistfully at the passing idyllic scenes with their grassy meadows and graceful elms. Later while visiting various stately homes around Toronto, or attending ballet workshops in a turreted old Victorian, I would be suddenly captured by a dark and moody landscape in gilded frame and be lulled into a quiet respite by the serene, atmospheric, ethereal glow. The emotion evoked by these experiences, dotted throughout my life’s journey, have been etched on my very being.
I learned that there is a collective name for paintings of that sort: Tonalism. I began to search out and pour over hundreds of examples available online, works by such tonalist artists as George Inness, J. Francis Murphy, Charles Warren Eaton, Charles Melville Dewey, and each time, thrilled that I could experience an immediacy of emotional response and transported once again into that quiet respite.
Through my paintings I hope to evoke that same response in those who view them.
Some influences along my journey include Maxfield Parish and John Atkinson Grimshaw for their stirring use of ‘golden hour’ lighting, and most of the American tonalists, especially George Inness (1825 – 1894), and contemporary tonalist Dennis Sheehan.
Some highlights of my artistic journey so far include first and second place awards as well as two honourable mentions in various juried exhibitions of the Federation of Canadian Artists; having my paintings hung in homes and corporate collections world wide; most recently, being elected to signature status (SCA) with the Society of Canadian Artists as well as an Associate Federation of Canadian Artists (AFCA)."
