The Acadia University Singers present “Fiery Spirit” – a program of empowering choral music inspired by the courage and creativity of Hildegard von Bingen.
With music by Elaine Hagenberg, Jocelyn Hagen, Sarah Quartel, Sherryl Sewepagaham, Tracy Wong, and more, this concert features stories and legends of daring and exceptional women throughout history – women who dared to defy gravity. The narrative thread woven throughout the program, connecting these stories, is the life of Hildegard von Bingen: a twelfth-century composer, nun, visionary, ecologist, and healer. A remarkable figure who championed ecological protection and social justice, fiercely defended her community, and asserted her creative and visionary voice amid oppressive times, Hildegard’s exemplary actions remain a powerful inspiration for our times.
The Acadia University Singers are a treble-voice chamber, directed by Dr. Michelle Boyd and accompanied by pianist Cian McCarron. They will be joined on the program by violinist Rebecca Czerny, saxophonist Abbie Coventry, and the AUS tenors and basses to perform a diverse selection of treble- and mixed-voice choral music, both accompanied and a cappella.
In the words of Hildegard, “in a world that’s being shipwrecked, we must remain brave and strong.” Through this program of uplifting stores and songs, the Acadia University Singers empower you to be brave and strong amid our own turbulent times. We invite you to join us in this celebration of beauty, kindness, and creativity – and let us help you empower your own fiery spirit!
