Mike’s connection to music was strong from an early age. He used to look up to the musicians and artists of the world as the leading voices of reason, love, sanity, equality and hope. His biggest influences are John Lennon, Bob Dylan, Gordon Lightfoot and Neil Young.
He could cite many other musicians as well, from a variety of genres, including classical, soul, R & B, folk and blues, but the most important addition since discovering his music and story, is Woody Guthrie. He would like to believe that his own songs are in this purposeful tradition: that of raising awareness about current political, environmental and social issues, while taking the time to show sensitivity for the closer details of human stories.
Many of my songs are a reflection of the world I have chosen to work in: in First Nations communities (Woodland Cree & Dene), in the north. The song “I’m Weary” is a plea for awareness and change, change from the oppressive cycle of violence that dominates the social fabric of the community I live in, and of the world in general. I made a demo of three songs recently, as a first step to recording a full CD. The CD will be called “The Northern Lights: Songs of Spirit”, and it will be dedicated to the kids and youth of the north, especially to those I met.
