About the Artists:
Hayley and Ellen are a fiddle & harp duo based in K'jipuktuk/Halifax, Nova Scotia. Their music stems from a deep love of traditional music from Scotland, Ireland and Canada, and is informed by explorations into improvised, classical, and jazz music.
Composed while Hayley was living in a village next to the highest tides in the world, the music of Natural Elements reflects the spacious peacefulness and dynamic intricacies of the landscape, as well as celebrating the powerful resonances of the violin's open strings.
The duo is half of a larger ensemble with drums and bass, Natural Elements Quartet, which had its debut in 2023 at the Music Room, and performed on the Halifax Jazz Festival Mainstage in the summer of 2025.
Both experienced educators, Hayley and Ellen have taught many private students and led workshops including at the Huron Harp Festival, Canadian International Summer Harp Institute, Hole Crook Fiddle Association, and Toronto Fiddle Collective. Hayley and Ellen's own studies have been intensive, including formal training at Canadian music schools (Humber and McGill, respectively), traditional music studies overseas, and local improvisation training with the Creative Music Workshop.
