Dr. Adam Jortner will speak on “Cross Border: Henry Alline and Christian Nationalisms.” Dr. Jortner is Goodwin Philpott Eminent Professor of Religion at Auburn University and visiting scholar with the Acadia Centre for Baptist and Anabaptist Studies.

Two hundred and fifty years ago, Henry Alline preached a new, mystical form of Protestant Christianity across the Annapolis Valley in Nova Scotia. Thousands of people came to hear him preach as the American Revolution broke over the British Atlantic. Yet Alline’s message did not bless either the Revolution or the British Empire—and his were the largest Christian revivals of the day. What does this say about modern claims for America’s “Christian founding”? What does it mean for the reports of the death of “Christian Canada”? How should historians and Christians interpret the history of the church and the birth of nations? Is there such a thing as a “Christian nation”?
