"The Veil of the Waters"
Artwork by Jose Urbay
May 2nd – 30th, at ArtCan Gallery
Jose Urbays’ exhibition, “The Veil of the Waters,” presents a series of paintings that explore how the Nova Scotia landscape shapes his individual reality as a Cuban immigrant. Using a surrealistic approach, Urbays captures the region’s iconic coastal features—like lighthouses and fishing communities—as emotional and nostalgic reservoirs. His work features floating underwater images that create a visual veil, blending the rugged Maritime coast with memories of warmer shores. Through a symbolic language, he addresses themes of nostalgia, immigration, and climate change.
