Acts of recording can function as systems of control. These works ask how alternative forms of perception might shift our understanding of shared environments.
Using experimental camera holders attached to goose decoys, remote-controlled cars, bicycles, and animals including dogs, horses, and cats, Sidley captures moving images that depart from a singular human point of view. The resulting footage mimics more-than-human perspectives while drawing attention to the ubiquity and absurdity of contemporary recording devices.
Suspended within a digital sky modelled after Google Street View, the videos are layered with animated eye floaters. The floaters reference the physical limitations of human sight, while the spotlights point to the influence of social media algorithms and language models in directing attention. Repeated Google copyright logos embedded throughout the installation underscore the role of large technology companies in shaping how environments are represented and understood.
An accompanying sound work features four speakers discussing personal experiences with vision and digital technology alongside readings on the science of vision and principles of linear perspective.
Originally from Rossland, British Columbia, on the territory of the Sinixt People, Sage Sidley is a recent graduate of NSCAD University's MFA program in Fine and Media Arts in K'jipuktuk (Halifax, Nova Scotia). Her practice explores relationships between place, observation, and technology through expanded drawing and media installation. Sidley has exhibited in public galleries across British Columbia and Nova Scotia and has participated in residencies including Ubisoft Halifax, Berlin Art Institute, and Inverness County Centre for the Arts and the Vermont Studio Artist residency (where the work was started). The project was funded by Arts Nova Scotia Create Grant 2025.
