Event in Room: In-person or Online (via Zoom)
Join us in-person or online for a conversation live from Sable Island with artist-in-residence Nayani Jensen and Sable Island Institute President, Zoe Lucas.
During her residence, Nayani will be working on a chapbook of field-note poetry and observations about the island.
“I've been fascinated by Sable Island for as long as I can remember. I cannot wait to write and explore and think deeply about this incredible landscape and nature writing and art.”
“My academic work looks at the history of climate communication, so this intersection of environmental writing and creative work is really a dream for me.”
With moderator Zoe Lucas (Sable Island Institute president), Nayani will share early outcomes of the residency and take questions.
This talk continues ARTSPLACE's experiments with new tools for the age-old art of conversation.

NAYANI JENSEN is a writer and historian of science from Halifax, Nova Scotia (Kjipuktuk). After studying Mechanical Engineering and working on climate research projects, she received a Rhodes Scholarship and went on to study English Literature and History of Science at the University of Oxford. In both her academic and creative work she is interested in merging arts and sciences in interdisciplinary approaches to history, science and fiction.
Her fiction and poetry have appeared or are forthcoming in publications including Ploughshares, Nature, The New Quarterly, and Augur Magazine, and she received the 2024 RBC Bronwen Wallace award for Emerging Writers from the Writers’ Trust of Canada. She is currently completing a PhD on the history of climate science at the University of Toronto. Her debut short fiction collection TWO BODIES IN FLIGHT is forthcoming from Scribner Canada in 2027.
-----------------------------------------
ZOE LUCAS received an MFA in 1977 from Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. In 1974, while at NSCAD, she began working on Sable Island as a volunteer cook and field assistant with a Dalhousie University seal research team, and after a few seasons continued on the island as manager/technician for the terrain restoration program.
By 1982, Zoe was involved full-time with Sable projects, conducting various research and monitoring programs including studies of plastic debris in the marine environment, and shark predation on seals. Long-term projects include research on the island’s horses, beach surveys for oiled seabirds, and biodiversity studies (mosses, lichens, fungi, and invertebrates). Results of research programs have been published in peer-reviewed scientific journals, as well as in newsletters and magazines.
In 2008 Zoe received an Honorary Doctorate from Dalhousie University, and in 2017 established the Sable Island Institute.
