F. Scott MacLeod with select works by Joan Bruneau
November 14th – December 24th

Harvest Gallery is pleased to present a collection of brilliant new works by landscape & figurative oil painter F. Scott MacLeod including select works by master potter Joan Bruneau.

Born in Sydney, Nova Scotia, in 1954, F. Scott MacLeod moved to Lunenburg in 1999 after many years living and working in Ontario. A self-taught artist, MacLeod has explored a variety of mediums, with oil painting now at the center of his practice. His work has been exhibited in numerous solo and group exhibitions, and his paintings are held in major private and corporate collections throughout Canada and the United States. Influenced by artists such as Matisse, Modigliani and Diebenkorn, MacLeod has developed a distinctive style characterized by bold compositions, vibrant colour and an expressive, painterly approach.

“My works are based on restructured memories. I don’t work ‘on site’ or from reference. Instead, I take in and observe locales and people that interest me. At a later time, these images and feelings crystallize into paintings. My concerns in painting are with light, colour (to create mood), composition, and design. The images draw from both classical forms and abstraction and are usually presented as a vista or overview. The portraits attempt to create strong psychological studies. Working this way allows me to edit the painting and redesign the remembered image.” – F. Scott MacLeod

Joan Bruneau is a master potter and educator based near Lunenburg, Nova Scotia. She operated Nova Terra Cotta Pottery in Lunenburg from 1995 to 2022 where she frequently featured paintings by MacLeod. She also taught ceramics at NSCAD University for more than two decades. A graduate of NSCAD University (BFA) and the University of Minnesota (MFA), Bruneau has also taught at Emily Carr University, the Lunenburg School of the Arts, and through workshops and international programs. Her work and expertise have been featured in Ceramics Monthly and several publications on ceramic practice and technique.

Bruneau’s pottery celebrates the beauty found in everyday life, creating functional yet decorative pieces that invite interaction and connection. Inspired by the buds, blossoms, wildflowers and woodland plants of her surroundings, her Flower Bricks and Lidded Vases bring together sculptural forms and intricate surface patterns. Skillfully wheel-thrown using Nova Scotia earthenware, each piece is hand-decorated with incised patterns and vibrant, food-safe glazes. Her work encourages us to find beauty in the commonplace and to bring everyday objects to life through use and shared experience.

An opening reception will be held on Saturday, Nov 14th, from 1–3 pm.
