From Tradition to Far Out, ARTs Tuesday Informs & Entertains
An eclectic mix of music, art and drama is on the agenda for the April 17 ARTs Tuesday at ARTsPLACE, home of the Annapolis Region Community Arts Council (ARCAC). This will be the final session of ARCAC’s monthly “cultural sampler” for this season.
Singer/songwriter/guitarist Caleb Miles will kick off the evening with a selection of blues/country/roots/rock music. Originally from Albuquerque, New Mexico, Miles joined his first professional rock band at the age of 15 and quickly established himself as a distinctive lead guitarist. He eventually settled in Portland, Oregon, where he performed and recorded for a number of years before moving to Nova Scotia in 2005. He now calls Carleton Corner home. Since relocating to Nova Scotia, he has recorded three CDs of original music. He performs solo and as a member of The Hupman Brothers Band and also plays drums for Bridgetown’s indie-rock band Dayliner.
Chief (retired) Greg McEwan of Bear River First Nations, a maker of traditional Mi’kmaq baskets, will present the arts portion of the program. McEwan makes baskets by hand, using materials from the forest – primarily ash – which is split, hewn and pounded with a heavy object to separate the growth rings.
Under the auspices of the Annapolis District Drama Group, the drama portion of the evening will make the leap to the outer reaches of the universe. Michelle Hall will direct accomplished actress Brenda Keen in excerpts of The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe. Lily Tomlin won the 1986 Tony award for Best Actress for her role in this play, written by Jane Wagner. The film version followed in 1991, and Tomlin was named the “Funniest Actress in a Motion Picture” at the American Comedy Awards. Those who have seen Keen on the stage know they’re in for an award-worthy performance.
There will be a break between each half hour segment of the program for mingling, enjoying refreshments, viewing gallery exhibits, and chatting with performers.
ARTs Tuesday is funded by a Cultural Activities Program grant from the Nova Scotia Department of Communities, Culture and Heritage. The program begins at 7:00 at ARTsPLACE, 396 St. George Street, in Annapolis Royal, and usually runs about two hours. Admission is by donation.
