All our welcome to join the Avon River Heritage Society Museum (ARHS) and the Hants County Arts Council (HCAC) in welcoming several wood carvers for the third instalment of Heritage Artisans in Action. Taking place throughout the ARHS museum, we will be joined by local artisans Andrew Harvie, Jim Tracey and Al Carter to demonstrate their craft and display a selection of their carved wooden creations!
While you may recognize Andrew Harvie as the fellow behind the harp at HCAC events, he also takes a turn at woodworking. His preference is for working with hand tools for the very simple reason that they don't scare the cats. Working with traditional tools does take longer than with power tools, but if the goal is to relax while producing an object of simple beauty, then they're just the thing.
Jim Tracey's quirky sense of humour and love of bright colour is what brings life to each one of his creations! Incorporating reclaimed wood from old barns and driftwood from local beaches, Jim's work often seems to tell a story. His creations vary from small functional pieces such as bird houses, 3-dimensional framed wall hangings and small table top carvings to eight foot high funky birds that belong outside in your garden.
Alfred Carter came from a childhood with 4 boys and not a lot of money, but a lot of love and encouragement! So naturally he believed that if he wanted something he could get it, make it, or improve it. He still does. Al has worked as a gold miner, carpenter, bartender, minister, and has owned a couple of successful businesses, among other things. He apprenticed as a ships carver, making figureheads for sailing ships and he continues to expand on his skill set restoring derelict homes, gardens, and grounds.
