The Wolfville Farmers Market is Celebrating the Seed at their 7th annual Seedy Saturday event. There is good reason to celebrate seeds as they give us so many daily gifts. Our abundant local harvests began with a simple seed planted in the rich valley soil.
“We have seeds to thank for the coffee and tea that wakes us up in the morning, for the fruit, juice and cereal we have for breakfast, for the roasted veggie sandwiches and the hearty vegetable stews we eat for lunch and dinner, and let’s not forget to thank seeds for the chocolate cake! Beyond delicious foods, we also have seeds to thank for growing the trees that give us shelter in our homes and so many other gifts: plant based medicines, cotton fabrics, books, food for our animals, and very importantly, clean breathable air! It all starts with a seed,” said Melanie Priesnitz, Conservation Horticulturist with the Harriet Irving Botanical Gardens and one of the Seedy Saturday organizers.
To share information and enthusiasm about seed saving and why it’s important, local experts will be offering 15 minute talks from 10am - 1pm. Young green thumbs can learn about seed dispersal in a fun game at the Children’s Table. But, before coming down to our celebration, check your drawers and potting benches to see if you have any seed collected or purchased last season that you’d like to swap or donate at our Community Seed Exchange Table.
“We hope that you’ll join us as we Celebrate the Seed,” said Angela Melanson, Assistant Manager at the Wolfville Farmers Market. “The event is an opportunity for local gardeners to share their knowledge, buy and swap seeds, be inspired, and prepare for the upcoming growing season. It’s time to get back to the garden and for seeds to germinate once again, but first, help us to Celebrate the Seed!”
