Author Michael Harris recently published PARTY OF ONE, a book that outlines Stephen Harper’s work in changing Canada as we knew it. This inaugural Cinéma Politique event will use a video presentation Mr. Harris made to Unifor to stimulate discussion around our thoughts about what Harper has done to Canada, and what we might do to support more progressive politics.

A few quotes from the book jacket:
● “Parliament has become so undermined it is almost unable to do the job that people expect of it. A glaring example is the budget bill, where there was no thoughtful debate or scrutiny of the legislation.” — Sheila Fraser (Former Auditor General)
● “Mr. Harper has not played within the rules. Having attained absolute power, he has absolutely abused that power to the maximum.” — Robert Marleau (former Clerk of the House of Commons & Information Commissioner)
● “We took Parliament for granted, but, like the environment, it turns out that it is an incredibly delicate and fragile structure. Harper has smothered Ps and is destroying Parliament.” — Farley Mowat, author
● "You won't recognize Canada when I'm through with it." Stephen Harper, Prime Minister of Canada. Okay, that one isn’t on the jacket but it is something Harper said in 2006.

A small group of concerned citizens in the area (Wolfville Advocates for Progressive Politics, or WAPP) is sponsoring this event. The group meets bi-weekly at lunchtime to discuss concerns regarding several aspects of the direction which our current federal Government (AKA The Harper government) is leading the country.

One of the issues discussed at the meetings is the need for real electoral reform, and how that might be brought about. We would like to see a government that represents us all fully, not a “mean-spirited” or “bully” government like we currently have, representing only the corporate lobby groups they deem worthy.

All the above is the rationale for this & future meetings, using such events with invited speakers &/or relevant videos. WAPP hopes to encourage a broad segment of our local population to become interested in these important issues, and become participants in various activities in this election year. We look forward to your participation.
