Capture 2014: Nova Scotian Realism
May 2 – June 28
join us for the opening reception on May 2nd, 7pm
This exhibition, initiated by Professional Living Artists of Nova Scotia (PLANS) explores realism as part of the diverse history of Nova Scotian art. A province wide call, and studio visits resulted in a selection of 28 artists representing almost every region of the province. The works are organized into several different categories and genres based on the concept of “capturing” experience, place or ideas through modes of Realism.
Realism’s long, sometimes uneasy relationship with contemporary artmaking practices has often seen its proponents at odds with current mainstream or academic modes and genres. Capture 2014: Nova Scotian Realism seeks to dispel common assumptions about the nature of Realist art by presenting recent work by artists who are pushing its boundaries.
Curated by Peter Dykhuis & Tom Smart with project support from the Robert Pope and Craig Foundations. Touring exhibition coordinated by Dalhousie Art Gallery with support from Art Gallery of Nova Scotia.
