This workshop will assist the beginning genealogist on their journey of discovering family roots. Topics covered will include identifying your ancestors, primary and secondary sources and their uses, what local resources are available for you to easily use and organizing found information. Methods which can “flesh out” bare facts and dates with information about your ancestor and way of life will also be presented. PowerPoint presentation, primary and secondary source examples, publications and printed genealogy examples, as well as informational handouts will make up workshop resources.

DOROTHY OUTHOUSE is a long-time resident of Long Island with over eight generations of multiple family roots within Digby County. Fascinated by family stories and photographs of multiple family generations held by her maternal grandmother, she has been digging through her family tree for over forty years. Dorothy has taken numerous workshops related to genealogy and has certificates related to both museum and archival related studies. She was the 2006 recipient of the Council of Nova Scotia Archives’ “Anna Hamilton Award” for outstanding archival volunteer service and currently works with Islands Historical Society in Freeport, Nova Scotia.
