Obed Fest, a Genealogy Conference and celebration of the life and descendants of New England Planter Obediah Benjamin (1729-1806), makes its debut June 30 and July 1st in the towns of Wolfville and Kentville, Nova Scotia.
Obed Fest owes its creation to people with common matches of Genealogical Ancestry DNA testing across Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom. On meeting, many of these “new” cousins realized their common ancestor connection was Obed Benjamin, who was born in Connecticut in 1729, and made the exodus to Kings County, Nova Scotia as a New England Planter. Obed was a key ancestor of leaders of the lumber industry that helped drive the economic wheels of Nova Scotia for decades. For years, living descendants thought of ways for new family connections to gather and meet. On searching for locations and dates for a get together, it was clear that the natural location for such a cultural gathering would be in Obed Benjamin’s final resting spot of Wolfville. Timing it with Canada 150 celebrations would be a perfect way for guests travelling from the US and UK to see firsthand the historic value of Canadian life and culture.
Obed Fest highlights include events at the Randall House Museum in Wolfville, a tour of the Kings County Museum in Kentville led by William Henry Chipman, a wine tasting at the acclaimed Benjamin Bridge winery in White Rock, and a Genealogy Convention/Family Reunion called “A Gathering of the Benjamins” June 30 at 7pm at the Old Orchard Inn in Wolfville. “A Gathering of the Benjamins” will feature a talk from author Judith Norton, and a live Planter Interpretation by Maynard Stevens as Planter Samuel Starr. All events are open to the public.
Obed Fest events kick off with a Wreath Ceremony at 9am June 30 at Obed Benjamin’s gravesite in the Old Burying Ground in Wolfville. The Ceremony will be led by Reverend Timothy McFarland, Chaplain of Acadia University, and Dean of the Manning Memorial Chapel.
