The extent of the continental shelf of a coastal State, and its responsibilities in management of that area, are governed by the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. The responsibilities of the Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf in considering any submission by a coastal State as to the limits of its shelf, and the consequences for all other coastal states (and even non-coastal States) will be presented. Canada`s interest in these matters will be discussed.

Richard Haworth is a marine geophysicist who spent many years as a research scientist at Bedford Institute before being appointed Chief Geophysicist with the British Geological Survey, then Director General of the Geological Survey of Canada and finally Assistant Deputy Minister with Natural Resources Canada before retiring to Wolfville. In retirement he has concentrated on Law of the Sea and has just completed 5 years as Canada`s candidate on the (UN) Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf in New York.
