We will begin the new year with Dr. Jonathon Fowles, a professor and exercise physiologist at Acadia University. His work in the Centre of Lifestyle Studies examines the effects of exercise on health in athletes, the elderly and persons with chronic disease or disability. Dr. Fowles has spearheaded initiatives with many organizations such as the Diabetes Canada, the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology, the Heart and Stroke Foundation and regional Health Authorities, to increase capacity for physical activity counseling by health care providers. Dr. Fowles is currently the Chair of the National Advisory Council for Exercise is Medicine Canada, a multi-disciplinary collective advocating for physical activity as key component for the prevention and treatment of chronic disease.
The Newcomers’ Club welcomes all residents of the Annapolis Valley. You don’t have to be a newcomer to come to the meetings or to join the group: long-time residents are welcome too! Bring your favourite small coffee cup and enjoy fresh perked coffee and a sweet treat.
Meetings are held on the first Tuesday of every month in the Wolfville Farmers’ Market Building, and are open to the public. They feature informative speakers on topics of local interest. Members can participate in the many interest groups such as off-road biking, gourmet dining and bridge. This is a great place to meet new people, learn about the area, and forge a sense of community.
