About the Acadia New Music Festival:
The Acadia New Music Society promotes contemporary concert music in the Annapolis Valley of Nova Scotia. Co-Directed by Derek Charke and Mark Hopkins, the primary outlet for this is an annual New Music Festival. The scope of the Acadia New Music Society’s activities has blossomed over the past ten years. We have successfully presented over 50 concerts, including a CBC national broadcast, initiated the creation of four commercial CD’s, and hosted multiple composers, musicians, and ensembles. Most of all, we have presented a fantastic collection of Canadian artists over these years.
WIRED! is the resident ensemble of the Acadia New Music Society. The WIRED! Ensemble is the brainchild of conductor Mark Hopkins and composer Derek Charke. Along with some of the finest performers in the Maritimes, (including members of Symphony Nova Scotia and teaching Faculty from two Maritime universities), this ensemble seeks to perform the great chamber music of our time to the highest professional standard.
About the composers:
Ana Sokolovic is a Montreal-based composer of Serbian origin whose contemporary pieces have won several awards in Canada. Her music has been performed at London’s Royal Opera House and Montreal’s Conservatory of Music. Sokolovic is the first woman composer to create an operatic work for the Canadian Opera Company. Sokolovic was also a nominee for the Juno Awards of 2017.
Gérard Grisey's music is often considered to belong to the genre of spectral music. Grisey won the highly coveted Prix de Rome. Vortex Temporum, the work presented on this concert is a tour-de-force, featuring Simon Docking on Piano with the WIRED! Ensemble, conducted by Mark Hopkins.
