Wizard of OZ adapted from Frank Baum’s novel and the 1939 MGM motion picture was first produced by the Royal Shakespeare Company and features the music of Harold Arlen and lyrics by EY Harburg. It features a cast of over 30 students many of them playing multiple roles to create the magic we know and love from the Emerald City.
West Kings students have been rehearsing since mid-October to polish the songs and dialog that makes the story a family favorite. One of the shows co-directors alongside of David Oleary, Hal Jessome says by the time opening night comes along close to 100 students will have touched the production in some capacity. “When you factor in the cast, back stage, technical operations, live music and front of the house a lot of fingers have been in the OZ pie, not to mention support we get from parents, community members and alumni. It’s a huge undertaking that requires huge commitment from all involved. Its awesome for the students to see something develop from an idea and watch it grow to a production that they will remember as a highlight from their time spent in high school”.
Wizard of OZ follows a small town farm girl Dorothy (Sophie McMillian gr. 10) on her journey through a magical kingdom in pursuit of a way back home. On the way she gets advice from Glinda the good witch (Julie Rowe gr. 12), to protect the ruby slippers and stay far away from the Wicked Witch (Erin Leblanc gr. 12). Dorothy is accompanied by three unlikely friends; a dimwitted scarecrow (Carson Rafuse gr. 12), a rusty tinman (Natanya Backhouse gr. 11) and a very cowardly lion (Caitlyn Strong gr. 12). Narrowly missing close calls with winkies, flying monkeys, and poison poppies she relies on the comical assistance of the palace guard (Oliver Cadrain gr. 12) and the sage advice of the Wizard himself (Liam Balsch gr. 12).
