Exhibition runs from April 4 to May 9
Opening reception & artist talk from artist Katie Belcher for her exhbition "The Archive", exhibition funded through the Canada Council for the Arts.
In The Archive, Belcher presents a collection of images drawn from both memory and life. Belcher has selected subjects with a natural tactility, a quality she strives to skillfully represent in the works; their weight, texture and physical presence. The static subjects are animated by the tonal variations and marks beyond their outer contours. By alternating between highly realistic representation and loose mark-making and erasure, Belcher aims to capture both the tangible and intangible qualities of the subject.
As a whole, the Charcoal series explores the processing of experience by juxtaposing images in a changing sequence of works. Drawings that represent disparate experiences may suggest something entirely new when presented together. With each new installation of these drawings, Belcher finds shifts in the meaning of the individual works themselves. In this way, the artist acts as the curator of this collection of personal and shared experiences.
