Daniel is a wizard on stringed instruments. He is a world-class composer and musician, and he has performed in festivals across Canada and internationally. He has also been featured several times on CBC and Radio-Canada, radio and television. Daniel's music demonstrates a multi-faceted knowledge, and range of styles that qualifies as eclectic, unique and truly entertaining. Over the last nine years he has received numerous grants for presentation and composing. He has written for film, theatre, dance and radio, and released fifteen CDs. The first CD, Thoughts for My Father, was nominated for an East Coast Music Award in 1993. The others have received excellent reviews.
For this up-coming event, Daniel will be performing on acoustic and classical guitars, cittern, banjo, lap-steel slide guitar and recorders.
What the critics say:
"One of Nova Scotia's musical treasures." - Norman Adams, the principal cellist for Symphony Nova Scotia.
On Eagles' Paradise, "Heikalo plays the cittern in such a way as few have tried." - Paul-Emile Comeau, Dirty Linen, the magazine of folk and world music.
"The music on Thoughts For My Father is astonishing. Heikalo combines the fluent finger technique of a classical guitarist with an ear for the exotic sound of middle eastern music… musically speaking, he is completely multi-lingual… Heikalo's… imagination is unique." - Stephen Pedersen, The Chronicle Herald, Halifax.
"If points are going out for originality, Heikalo's got full marks. His guitar and cittern compositions have forced listeners to drop any preconceived notions of what jazz and folk music should sound like." - The Coast, Halifax.
"Heikalo's magic is world class." - Gary Peterson, Capital Times, Madison, Wisconsin
"Music without boundaries." - Charles Austin, The Coast, Halifax.
"Each piece is a gem of virtuosic simplicity…" - François Couture, All Music Guide
"Will leave you spellbound." - Shel Kagan, The Fortnightly College Radio Report, Bristol RI
"Heikalo's music conjures infinite moods and images. Hauntingly beautiful." - Words and Music, SOCAN's magazine.
"It's not simply that Daniel is eclectic, and not just that his own musical skills are magnificent; he has the most active musical ears of anybody I've ever known, and has the powers to make what he hears and imagines come alive." - Hugh A. Blackmer, Ethnomusicologist, musician and instrument builder, Washington and Lee University, Lexington, Virginia.
"He strikes a surprisingly comfortable balance between a gentle, pastoral melodicism and an intense (though never tense) intricacy which can have him exploring three or more independent though interrelated ideas simultaneously. Heikalo has already been tabbed "a new guitar hero", and this reviewer has no intentions of arguing that point." - Tom Bingham, Option. Los Angeles.
