Dr. Piita (Peter) Taqtu Irniq is returning to Acadia University and the Annapolis Valley on what we are calling his Friendship Tour!

Dr. Irniq is an Inuk Elder, cultural teacher, and has held numerous senior public official roles, including serving as an elected member of the NWT Legislative Assembly, and as the former Commissioner of Nunavut (2000 - 2005).

Dr. Irniq received an honorary doctorate from Acadia University.

He has devoted his life to promoting and protecting Inuit culture, knowledge systems, and ways of being.

He remains active in seeking justice for the former students of the infamous Joseph Bernier residential school in Chesterfield Inlet, who suffered physical and sexual abuse at the hands of school staff.

On this matter, most recently he is quoted in a February 2019 CBC news story: https://www.cbc.ca/news/indigenous/priest-accused-abuse-friendship-piita-irniq-1.3909174
