TERRA SPENCER
Terra Spencer spent much of her youth in a basement in Summerville, Hants County playing piano and secretly strumming her granddad’s guitars. Since 2014 she has taken the odd break from her day job as a funeral director to tour as a vocalist and guitar slinger with Ryan Cook, including their recent tour of Ontario, the UK, and Europe from February through April 2019. A newfound passion for songwriting led to collaborations with Ryan (for his award-winning album Having A Great Time), David Francey, and Gabriel Minnikin. In January 2019, Terra released Other People’s Lives, her own debut album of original songs recorded with co-producer Jake Smith at Moe’s Place in Windsor, NS. Terra’s songs are intimate stories woven with gentle fingerstyle guitar and gospel piano, inspired by the likes of Jackson Browne, Judee Sill, and Sufjan Stevens. Terra cherishes the quiet conversation between herself and each listener as they lean in together.
LEANNE HOFFMAN
Leanne Hoffman’s work is a tribute to the magic of songwriting. The Halifax based singer-songwriter can lift words off a page and hearts out of their chests. She has been singing and playing keys with a wide variety of musical projects for the past 8 years but for Hoffman, words have always come first. It is the pursuit of that magical pairing of lyrics and melody that lead her to create unique songs that are impossible to ignore. Her debut solo album, “What Remains” produced by Erin Costelo will be released on Costelo’s label, Venue Records in May of this year. The album features songs spanning the rollercoaster of Hoffman’s past five years. The result feels equally indebted to contemporary pop acts like Metric as it does to songwriting greats like Randy Newman and Paul Simon. Against a backdrop of Americana-influenced guitars and subtle synths, Hoffman’s lyrics and resonant voice remain front and center: she’s singing about subjects from romance to family and aging to gender equality, sharing her soul as she chases that magical musical synergy.
