Outdoor Community

What lives in your backyard, or those natural spaces around your neighbourhood, or even inside your home?
Science wants to know!
Join thousands of people from across the world and help celebrate Nature, and the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, during this incredibly difficult time. Let's re-connect with each other and our planet, virtually.
Participation is easy, and anyone can join:
1) Download the citizen science application for your phone or computer: inaturalist.ca
2) Take photos of the living things you find (think flowers, shrubs, insects, salamanders, lichen and fungi, deer, birds - everything alive!) Note. In the valley, we're looking to learn more about sand barrens, see here for more info: https://www.annapolisriver.ca/annapolis-sand-barrens
3) Upload observations, share with a global community of naturalists, find out what you saw, help scientists monitor Nature! and, most importantly, have fun!
In 2020 the Maritime Backyard Bioblitz starts on April 24th (midnight) and ends on April 27th (midnight). Observations recorded during this period may be uploaded until the end of the competition on May 3rd. However, we do encourage participants to upload their photos as soon as possible as this will provide more time for identification.
