This autumn, the Ross Creek Centre and NSCAD University invite you to participate in ‘The Mountain and the Valley’ project! The goal of the project is to gather together members of the North Mountain and the Annapolis Valley communities, to share stories about their experiences of living here. Whether as 5th generation settler, a new arrival, or as someone whose ancestors are from this land, we would love to hear about your experience!

We hope to gather community members throughout September and October at a series of workshops where participants will practice strategies for telling, drawing and writing out their stories. Anyone interested in the project is welcome to register, regardless of age or prior artistic experience- if you would like to share in the exchange of local knowledge, we welcome you! In preparation, we ask that participants consider bringing an object, artifact or memento from home that they think represents the community in which they live. Creative interpretations of this are encouraged!

After using these objects to jump-start our conversation, we will assist participants in choosing a meaningful story that touches on the idea of “home”, “place” or “belonging” and challenge them to write and illustrate this story in 100 words or less. At the end of this workshop series, (and with the help of the Gaspereau Press!), we hope to compile a selection of these stories into a beautiful publication. We intend to celebrate all of the writing and artwork created during the workshops at a formal art exhibition and book launch party, which we would host at the Ross Creek Professional Art Gallery in late autumn.
