“Anne with an Outcry:
CBC/Netflix’s Dark Version of L.M. Montgomery’s Anne of Green Gables” by Dr. Laura Robinson, Dean of Arts, Professor of English and Theatre/Women’s and Gender Studies, Acadia University.
When Anne with an E launched several years ago, many Anne fans were horrified by the new, dark spin on the red-headed heroine of Montgomery’s famous novel. However, when Netflix announced in November 2019 that it was not renewing the television series, fans were again outraged. While the show’s more gothic, disturbing world seems disconnected from Montgomery’s story, this talk will argue that the television show simply teases out the darkness that already lives in Montgomery’s supposedly light-hearted novel.
