The Acadia School of Music's Concert & Lecture Series offers a presentation on Mental Wellness for Musicians by Dr. Sara Brooks.
There is little doubt that our artistic world has changed dramatically in the last two years. As we move forward and celebrate a return to music-making, many musicians are noticing that their mental wellness has been impacted. How do we care for our mental health needs as we move forward? How do we balance mental wellness with the demands of a professional music career long-term? Join for an interactive workshop addressing the unique mental health needs of musicians. Topics include self-care, sleep & nutrition, self-talk, perfectionism, and emotional health.
Dr. Sara Brooks holds a doctorate of music in choral conducting (University of Alberta), as well as master's and bachelor's degrees in piano performance (University of Ottawa; Acadia University). She also holds a master's of counselling psychology (University of Lethbridge) and is a Registered Psychotherapist with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario. She currently specializes in musician mental health. Dr. Brooks has been invited to lead mental wellness workshops for both student and professional music organizations across Canada. She is currently based in Waterloo, Ontario, where she works as a psychotherapist with Exhale Therapy in Kitchener. As a former sessional instructor and freelancing musician, Dr. Brooks holds a unique perspective on musician wellness in academia and brings this experience to her workshops.
Dr. Brooks is also an alumna of the School of Music; we are delighted to welcome her back to Acadia!
