Event in Room: Innovation Lab

This seminar presents the basics of creating and maintaining a web presence as an artist.

Garth will demonstrate how best to curate your website, social media, newsletter, and how to communicate using online media in a broad sense. We will examine successful case studies of artists who use these tools effectively, and consider ideas on what amount of online maintenance is really required. (Spoiler: It doesn't require you to be on-call 24/7!)

Attend if you are shy to step into the online world and don't know where to start. Garth will help make this process as easy as possible. You will leave feeling that social media is slightly less horrible!

Optional: If you would like to bring a smartphone, tablet and/or laptop, this will help, but this is not mandatory. Please note, however, there will be no tech assistance during the seminar.

Garth has been a traditional oil painter, digital animator, and online teacher for ten years. His first children's book that he wrote and illustrated was painted using a blend of traditional gouache paint and digital paint-overs. This hybrid analog - digital approach weaves through all of his artistic work as well as his philosophy for communication as artists. Garth grew up during a time when expectations have continued to rise for how much labour artists must devote to maintaining their digital storefronts, so he has gradually come to understand some of the complex pathways available to creating this online presence.
