Event in Room: Studio (upstairs)
Luminous Light: Photography without a camera
with Bonnie Baker
LEVEL:
Everyone (no photo experience needed)
Lumen printing is a slow paced way of making photo images using only photosensitive paper exposed to daylight, led lights, or smartphone flashlights.
We will place objects on fresh or expired black & white silver gelatin paper and expose them to light.
But, lumen prints are not made in a traditional darkroom nor with photography chemicals. They are developed under normal light and preserved by scanning them as digital photos or fixing in salted water.
Unlike traditional black and white photograms, lumen printing results in a spectrum of tones from warm yellow, orangish pinks and browns to deep purples and blues.
In this one-day workshop, we will create a number of lumen prints using a range of botanical materials and household objects under different conditions. There will be a big emphasis on experimenting.
As we go along, we will scan newly made prints then fix them, so participants will have two versions of each print they make: as a digital file and a physical photograph.
MATERIALS PROVIDED FOR YOU:
- Salt fixer
- Trays for washing and fixing
- Tongs
- Contact printing frames
- Instructions
- Scanner
MATERIALS TO BRING:
- Scissors
- A small bundle of freshly cut flowers, leafy herbs or plant matter to be placed on a 5”x7” rectangle
- Latex or non latex gloves
- Sunscreen and clothing suitable for long exposure in the sun
- Smartphone and charger (optional but useful)
- Notebook and pen (you will want to keep records for later!)
Bonnie Baker is a practising artist living in Annapolis Royal. In addition to camera-less photography, drawing and printmaking, she is known for her earlier work in textiles. She is currently working with cyanotypes, lumen prints, pinhole in combination with printmaking, and drawing.
Bonnie has led artmaking workshops throughout her professional career for students of all ages and experience levels. The dynamics of experimenting, building on the unexpected, and pursuing increasingly sophisticated compositions drives her practice. Bonnie brings a similar philosophy to her teaching, encouraging students to push themselves through their work and take it to the next level.
