Missed the Lunenburg Folk Harbour Festival and want to catch some of the great acts who were there? Or saw them this weekend and want to follow them around? The Valley’s beloved Terra Spencer warms up a Monday evening in the new space in Canning, with Newfoundland duo, Youngtree & Carole Bee.
The paths of funeral director-turned-songwriter Terra Spencer and Newfoundland duo Youngtree and Carole Bee converged at the Kempt Shore Acoustic Music Festival on Terra’s home soil in summer 2022, when they discovered a shared love of songs that explore the darker side of life and the lighter side of death. Their combined forces promise an evening that runs the gamut from tender storytelling to lively instrumentals to quick-witted confessionals. Raised on the mud banks of the Avon River with a stack of her aunt’s treasured LPs, Terra Spencer was recruited as a backup singer while scooping ice cream. She can make you feel knee-to-knee with her in a room of 5 or 500 with her butterscotch vibrato, deft fingerstyle guitar, church bench piano, sly humour, and ‘70s wood-paneled warmth. Her startling knack for telling intimate stories caught the attention of Canadian musical mentors and collaborators like David Francey, Dave Gunning, and Matt Andersen. She has become a sought-after studio musician, co-writer, producer, and workshop facilitator, and garnered recognition from Music NS, ECMAs, the Canadian Folk Music Awards, and numerous international songwriting competitions. “The real deal” – Ron Sexsmith Peter Youngtree and Carole Bestvater have been playing music together since 2015. Developing a close musical and creative partnership through their multiple award-winning band Youngtree & The Blooms, the two launched their spin-off duo in 2020, when the band’s summer dates were cancelled and five-piece bands weren’t allowed on Newfoundland stages. Their one rule – “only play music we love” – means an eclectic mix of Scandinavian, Irish, Newfoundland, and American folk music, original instrumental compositions inspired by bluegrass and classical influences, original lyrical compositions, and occasional forays into Surf Rock and Western Swing. Youngtree & Carole Bee has become a sought after act for their exuberant stage energy and clear love of music and performance, bringing joy and good-natured fun to their audiences.
