Born in 1954 in Sydney, Nova Scotia, F. Scott MacLeod lived and worked in Huntsville Ontario for many years, before returning to Nova Scotia in 1999. MacLeod is a self-taught artist and has worked in a variety of media. Although drawing has been one of his fortes, painting with oil on canvas now dominates his professional life.

His work continually evolves and yet maintains a strong, simplified approach. His paintings convey mood and emotion employing bold composition and vibrant colour applied in layers. They are stunning in their intensity and seductive in their beauty. His landscapes are much sought after.

Influenced by the likes of Matisse, Modigliani and Diebenkorn, MacLeod’s technique is spontaneous and painterly, not overthought; his works maintain cohesiveness in their structure and integrity in their composition. His paintings utter simple truths unfettered by politics, commerce, or dogma.

As MacLeod explains, for the most part this body of work is a result of the many trips to Ontario, driving through New Brunswick and Quebec observing and digesting the terrain shapes and light. Sometimes making sketches, sometimes relying only on memory. Since the paintings are composites, the litmus test does not depend on exactness, but rather “does it feel right”.

Sanna Rahola was born in Finland, and as a young child quickly became familiar with the vernacular of weaving in her home country. Sanna was already an accomplished weaver by the time she came to Halifax, Nova Scotia in the mid 1990’s. It was there she met Douglas Drdul, a gifted stringed instrument maker, beginning a partnership that has led to an extraordinary collaboration of uniquely inspired pieces combining their individual mastery of fibre and wood into a singular artistic vision.

After studying the virtuosity and subtlety of wool felting, Rahola developed a unique ability to ‘paint’ with fibre. At first glance it seems her images must have been rendered in pastel or paint, reflecting her astonishing abilities as a textile artist. Vividly colored and subtly rendered felt images are complimented by Douglas’s exquisitely crafted frames in Black Walnut.

I am always in awe of how nature (flora, fauna, the sun and the moon, etc.) are beautifully intermingled. Always observing, listening, and learning – this body of work is an attempt to demonstrate my appreciation for this symbiosis.

Both F. Scott MacLeod and Sanna Rahola have work in major private and corporate collections throughout North America and are regularly featured in group and solo exhibitions.

Both shows run until November 18th. Images and details can be found online at www.harvestgallery.ca For more information, contact Lynda Macdonald at harvestgallery@gmail.com.
