Explore elements of movement, balance and light, and create your own dynamic mobile sculptures with artist Andrew Maize.
In this workshop participants will learn about the history of kinetic sculpture, and learn strategies and techniques of working with a variety of materials including wire, string, and paper to animate their very own mobile compositions.
This is a hands-on (the only way with mobiles!) crash course in the basics of how to design, build and balance mobiles. The goal will be to leave with an understanding of first principles and a prototype you can hang at home.
MATERIALS PROVIDED FOR YOU:
-All materials will be provided
-All required tools will be available.
MATERIALS TO BRING:
-Packed lunch and beverages
-Pliers (needle nose, wire, big/small, whatever you have access to)
-(Optional) Any found objects or materials you are inspired to incorporate in your a mobile.
-(Optional) Feel free to bring sketch book, pencils, pens, etc. from your home supply.
ABOUT THE ARTIST:
Andrew Maize is an artist, educator, arts worker and kite enthusiast. His playful, collaborative and process-oriented approach to making art considers the relationships between language, place, people, technology and motion.
As an arts educator and organizer, he has been involved in collaborative projects that engage communities with art, both in traditional and non-traditional spaces. He graduated with a BFA from NSCAD University in Halifax NS in 2012, and a MFA from the University of Guelph in 2021, and from kindergarten in 1989. He is the recipient of multiple grants and awards, including from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, Canada Council for the Arts, Arts Nova Scotia and the Ontario Arts Council. He was shortlisted for the RBC Painting Competition in 2015 and 2016. He is a board member of the Lunenburg School of the Arts.
