This one-hour workshop explores the origins of the Mi’kmaw language, the official first language of Nova Scotia, and how it relates to the broader Algonquin language family. Presenter Semise’l Sa’n will share writing systems, common orthographies used in literature, Francis-Smith alphabets, and other fun facts about the Mi’kmaw language. Semise’l Sa’n (he/him) is of the Popo’l and Sa’n clans from We’kwistoqnik (Eskasoni First Nation.)
