We're very excited to host Kelly McMichael at the Annex this fall! With an opening set by local youth talents, East Coast Groove. Kelly will be offering a youth mentorship workshop while she's here as well. Details TBA.

Kelly McMichael is an artist and producer based in St. John’s, Newfoundland, originally from Peterborough, Ontario. She is a multi-instrumentalist who can sling a guitar, serenade on piano and program beats in equal measure. McMichael has toured North America and Europe as a member of acts The Burning Hell, Tim Baker, The Hidden Cameras and Sarah Harmer. Kelly’s early songwriting career was established in Ontario around 2007 through DIY feminist synth bands Rouge, and later on, Renders. Her interests cover a broad range of pop /rock production styles combining retro and futuristic sounds in service of commanding vocals and well-crafted songwriting. After a decade as a side player, McMichael’s independent debut LP Waves had a breakthrough in 2021, garnering a spot on the Polaris Prize shortlist, three Music NL Awards, and the ECMA for Best Rock Recording. Kelly’s sophomore album is a genreless expansion on the classic sound of her debut. Recorded and co-produced with Jake Nicoll, this music sits in the comfort of its core ideas while being utterly unafraid to try new things, including McMichael doing much of the recording herself. It plays exactly how its maker intended. “I write and record in a way that you’re just giving the song what it needs. Why limit the creativity? I don’t want limitations.” After The Sting Of It comes out fall 2024.

East Coast Groove is a newly formed band made up of Syd West (vocals/guitar), Lennon Lang (vocals/guitar), Izzy Hunt (Bass) and Allie Burns (drums/guitar). East Coast Groove made their debut at battle of the bands in May after rehearsing for about two weeks together. We are so excited to be opening for Kelly McMichael. We have a great set lined up with a few different varieties of music and are so excited to share it. We can’t wait for more opportunities in the future to showcase our and even more.
