The subtitle of FAR OUT! by Chris Murphy is “the untold story of the ’60’s-inspired ‘Back to the Land’ migration that changed Nova Scotia”.
That is the fascinating (but under-reported) period from roughly 1968-1975 when tens of thousands of Baby Boomers left their cities & hometowns for rural areas. Was it a rejection of corporate consumer society? Flight from the divisive politics of the Vietnam War? A desire to create a new life in harmony with nature? Or other, more personal reasons? Most "back-to-the-landers" left after a few gruelling winters, but those who stayed arguably changed this region in ways we're just coming to realize.
Chris will be interviewed by former CBC Radio host Costas Halavrezos & present a short film by his brother Peter Murphy featuring people interviewed for the book. This will be followed by an audience Q&A & a book signing.
