Speaker Patrick Kelly will present the Blomidon Naturalists Nature Talk this month on Our Galaxy: From Milk to Billions of Stars. The Milky Way was a mysterious band of white light that arched across the sky for most of human history. Galileo revolutionized the scientific understanding of the galaxy and our place in it in 1610, launching the modern journey of exploration and understanding of the heavens. This talk will consider highlights on this journey including the debate about the nature of “island universes” that was not settled until 1924. From there, we’ll consider how our perspectives of the galaxy have further evolved and what the future might hold.
