How to write about the inspiration for this work without sounding like a porno... As this exhibit enters the gallery space I’ll have 2 years of sobriety under my belt. As I review the years leading up to those first steps toward clarity, patterns arose in my rear view mirror. It’s only through a compassionate evaluation that I could allow the tales of former exploits evolve into soft expressions of an almost comically copious copulative past- respectfully.
There is a joyful sensuality of being that can be (mis)used in the desire to connect intimately with others. That is the inspiration for this work. The cone shape refers to the intensity of combined energies at the base, the weight of longing, the gravity of stagnancy and molding desires from something else. The closeness of the cone structures and the softness reflect on the human form and the pointedness of the shapes presented and how their shape and directions out and away from each other relay the critical moments.
The warm, vibrant colours illustrate physical longing and sensual play on a quilted stage, this is not a dissonant repent. Each piece represents a moment in my timeline, the energy of a relationship, brief or otherwise. The tangibility of heightened sensations - emotional and physical. The softness is the body and the bed.
In recent years I’ve accepted a great deal about myself in terms of being a neurodivergent queer, single parent and surveying pressures and priorities circumstantially and morally. It is only through a lens of examination and acceptance that I am able to objectify my misgivings and name them, even have a bit of a laugh at my own expense. That, personally, is truly a marker of rounding the corner on a healing path.
